PSPrinter 8.3.2J driver was developed for the KanjiTalk7 system environment.
When using System 7 or the Japanese Language Kit running on System 7
use the U.S. English version of PSPrinter 8.3.1.

NEW FEATURES IN PSPrinter 8.3.2J
･ Custom Page Size
If your printer supports user-definable page sizes, PSPrinter 8.3.2J allows you to specify custom page sizes.
･ Virtual Printer
Permits configuring the driver and printer without requiring a physical printer connection. A PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file can be selected and printer options configured. Additionally, Virtual Printer enables printing documents as PostScript files when not physically connected to the network.
･ TrueType GX font support
In addition to handling Type 1 PostScript fonts and traditional TrueType fonts, PSPrinter 8.3.2J also supports the use of GX fonts that may be embedded within documents created on a GX system or that may be on your hard disk.
･ Alternate Landscape
Alternate landscape enables overriding your printer's default rotation for landscape orientation. For more specific information please refer to the User Guide.
･ Full support for ColorSync 2.0
PSPrinter now provides enhanced color printing capabilities when used with ColorSync 2.0 and appropriate ColorSync profiles. ColorSync is available from Apple. Please check with your printer vendor for ColorSync profiles appropriate for your device.
･ Printing JPEG compressed images
All Level 2 printers can now enjoy significant speed improvements when printing JPEG compressed images.
･ Saving Print Options selections
PSPrinter now provides greater convenience in choosing how printing options are used. Clicking ﾒSaveﾓ after selecting your chosen printing options will now retain those options for the selected printer for the current and all subsequent print jobs. Selecting print options and not clicking Save will enable your selected print options for only that print job. Subsequent print jobs will then revert to the last saved settings.
･ KanjiTalk6/KanjiTalk7 encoding setup feature
New Adobe font packages consist of CID fonts which support KanjiTalk6 and KanjiTalk7 encodings. The KanjiTalk6/KanjiTalk7 encoding setup feature enables all Adobe PostScript printers to accept either font encoding.
INSTALLING PSPrinter
･ Ensure your Macintosh is running System 7.1 or later.
･ Double click the ﾒInstallﾓ icon
･ ﾒEasy Installﾓ will place the following files on your system:
PSPrinter (version 8.3.2J)
Chooser version J1-7.3 (if running KanjiTalk 7.1.2 or earlier.)
Printer description file folder
All of the PPDs that are available in the PPD folder at the time of the installation.
This ﾒRead Meﾓ file
･ Installation of PSPrinter 8.3.2J will overwrite any previous version of PSPrinter, but will not affect other printer drivers such as LaserWriter.
SETTING UP PRINTERS TO WORK WITH PSPrinter
After the installation program has completed, your next step is to
configure your printerﾕs options.
･ Open the ﾒChooserﾓ and select the PSPrinter icon.
･ From the adjacent window, select the printer you wish to set up.
･ Click the ﾒSetupﾓ button.
･ The driver will attempt to select the proper PPD and options for your printer and complete the set up automatically.
･ If the driver cannot find a PPD file that matches your printer, you will be prompted to select one. If you cannot find a PPD appropriate for your printer you may select the ﾒGeneric PPD.ﾓ The Generic PPD may not provide access to all of the special features of your printer. Special features may need to be configured via your printerﾕs front panel.
ABOUT PPD FILES
PPDs files contain information about specific product features used by PSPrinter and certain other applications. Once installed, these files are located in the Printer Descriptions folder within your systemﾕs Extensions folder.
Adobe and its PostScript licensees work together to provide the most up to date PostScript PPDs possible. If a PPD for your particular device is not included, please contact your printer, imagesetter or film recorder vendor for assistance.
ABOUT CREATING EPS FILES
You can create an Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file from any application program by clicking ﾒFileﾓ in the Print dialog, then clicking ﾒSave.ﾓ
When you create an EPS file, please note the following:
･ If you create an EPS file without including fonts, it may appear correct on your screen, but Courier may be substituted when it is printed if the selected font is not resident in the printer.
･ When creating EPS files with preview information included, some applications may not display the EPS file accurately on the screen.
･ EPS files are limited to a single page. If you have a multiple page document, create a separate EPS file from each page.
OPERATING TIPS FOR USING PSPrinter
When using the PSPrinter driver, you should be aware of the following:
･ After installing PSPrinter, you should select and setup a printer from the Chooser before attempting to print a document. You may see error message -8971 in instances where you attempt to print before setting up a printer.
･ When printing complex documents on a system with very low memory or over slow or very active networks, you may occasionally encounter time-out errors (typical error numbers would be -8993 or -4096.)
･ You may not be able to choose a printer from the Chooser when running some memory management programs such as SpeedDoubler and RamDoubler. This is caused by an incompatibility between Chooser and some memory management programs. Disabling the memory management software will correct this problem.
･ If you encounter a system crash when saving to file while a background print job is running, increase available memory by disabling unnecessary extensions.
･ Background printing is not available if PrintMonitor is not installed.
･ The KanjiTalk6/KanjiTalk7 character setting feature is not supported for applications which produce their own PostScript such as QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator and PageMaker or when saving the PostScript output to a file.
･ When printing from some application programs, the Printer Status window may hide the ﾒCancelﾓ button. If the button is not visible you may still cancel the print job by pressing the ﾔCommandﾕ and ﾔPeriodﾕ (□+.) keys together.
･ PSPrinter cannot alert you to a low disk space condition when creating a PostScript file. Should you run out of disk space, an incomplete file will be created. Subsequent use of the incomplete file will produce a PostScript error.
･ Cover pages may show invalid characters when printing to a non-Japanese PostScript printer.
･ If you will be using ﾒVirtual Printerﾓ to create and save PostScript files, you may wish to consider removing ﾒAssistant Tool Boxﾓ from your Extensions and Preferences folders. (Assistant Tool Box is found on most PowerBook computers.) If Assistant Tool Box is present, and you choose to save a PostScript file, the message: ﾒThis document can not be printed at the current time on the printer ﾒVirtual Printerﾓ because the printer is not available on the AppleTalk networkﾓ will be displayed. However, pressing the ﾒPrint Laterﾓ button will allow your PostScript file to be saved.
･ Printing multiple documents from the Finder may not work correctly if the documents have been created by different application programs.
･ Certain page imaging option combinations are not supported. For example, selecting ﾒn-Upﾓ combined with Landscape orientation and ﾒFlip Horizontalﾓ or ﾒFlip Verticalﾓ selections will produce unexpected results.
･ When using ﾒCustom Paper,ﾓ any single invalid margin setting may require you to re-enter valid values for all margin settings.
･ Although you can specify Custom dimension values in millimeters or inches, the Adobe Printer Driver stores these values internally in points (one point equals 1/72 of an inch). You might notice a difference in reported dimensions because of the driverﾕs internal conversion from millimeters or inches to points.
･ Whenever you switch printers, be sure to choose ﾒPage Setupﾓ in all open applications.
･ If your output appears to be formatted incorrectly, check whether the
paper size shown is ﾒOther.ﾓ If so, select the correct paper size.
･ PSPrinter allows you to specify which pages within a document you would
like to print. If you enter a value for ﾒFrom:ﾓ but do not enter a value
for ﾒTo:ﾓ the number ﾒ0ﾓ will be automatically entered into the ﾒTo:ﾓ field. The document will print from the page number specified to the end of the document.
･ The driver is not compatible with versions of ATM-J prior to 3.5.1.
･ When using versions ATM-J 3.8 or earlier, bitmap character data is restricted to 300dpi regardless of the selected printer resolution.
･ Outlined ATM and TrueType fonts rasterized on a Macintosh might not print clearly.
･ Character spacing for TrueType fonts may be incorrect when a ﾒStyleﾓ modification is applied.
･ Jobs which are saved to file will loose the italic slant for TrueType Helvetica
or Courier fonts. Use Type 1 fonts instead.
USING PSPrinter WITH POPULAR APPLICATIONS PROGRAMS
If you are experiencing problems printing from an application, Adobe recommends that you contact the application publisher. In some cases a newer version of the program may be available that will resolve your problem.
The following list describes some special cases that you should be aware of when working with certain application programs. (There may be other issues with these programs, or with other programs not mentioned in this document.)
Adobe Acrobat 2.1
･ When Assistant tool box is installed on a system, background printing may
cause a printing problem. Turn off Assistant toolbox or background printing.
Adobe Illustrator 5.0J
･ Only the first page of a multi page document is printed correctly if the N-up layout
option is selected.
Adobe PageMaker 5.0J, 6.0J
･ ﾒGraphic allow,ﾓ a PageMaker extension feature, may not print properly if you use ﾒOptionﾓ ﾒPrint.ﾓ
･ You may encounter a system error when downloading a Japanese TrueType font or when printing a page that contains PICT data. Try assigning more memory to the application or closing applications that may be running on your system.
･ PageMaker does not use the driver's input tray setting. The paper size setting
should be the same as the paper size in the current input tray.
ATM 3.5J
･ ATM 3.5J may not print correctly when vertical Japanese and Roman fonts are used together. Use ATM 3.8J instead.
ATM 3.8J
･ To avoid a System error, turn ﾒBackground printingﾓ off when printing a job while a previous job is downloading a bitmap font rasterized by ATM.
･ Character shapes may be distorted in jobs that are saved to file and contain bitmapped fonts rendered by ATM3.8J.
ATM 3.9.1J
･ Outlines rasterized by ATM 3.9.1J may be distorted when the ﾒReduceﾓ or ﾒEnlargeﾓ option in the Page Setup dialog is set to something other than 100%.
Canvas 3.5J
･ A System Error may occur if you place an EPS file with No Preview in a Canvas 3.5J document.
ClarisWorks 2.0J
･ Claris Works 2.0J cannot print a PICT (e.g., KanjiTalk desktop pattern) correctly.
EGWord 6.1J
･ On EGWord 6.1J, styled text, such as Outline, Condensed and Extended, may have odd character spacing. This does not happen on previous versions of EGWord.
･ Outline fonts and shadow fonts may appear differently on the screen then when printed.
FreeHand 3.1J
･ Printing a Japanese TrueType font using FreeHand 3.1J will cause a SystemError. It is recommended that you upgrade to FreeHand 5.0J or use a printer resident font to eliminate this problem.
･ FreeHand 3.1J will cause a PostScript error when using a PostScript font which is not in the target printer. It is recommended that you to upgrade to FreeHand 5.0J or download the needed font to eliminate this problem.
FreeHand 5.0J
･ When printing from FreeHand 5.0J, all Japanese fonts will be Ryumin-Light unless you check ﾒUnlimited Downloadable Font.ﾓ
･ Documents that use non-printer resident fonts may not print or may have the font substituted with Courier. For more details please refer to the application's manual.
･ The ﾒSubstitute Fontsﾓ option in the ﾒPage Setupﾓ dialog will be ignored and reset to default at print time due to an incompatibility between the ﾒSubstitute Fontsﾓ feature and FreeHand.
MacDraw II 1.1J
･ Multi-page MacDraw II 1.1J documents that contain Japanese TrueType fonts will hang your system.
Microsoft Excel 5.0
･ Due to an Excel limitation, printed Excel 5.0J graphs may be missing markers that are displayed on the screen.
Microsoft Word 6.0J
･ Word 6.0J, ﾒFormat-Characters...ﾓ and ﾒCharacter spacingﾓ commands are not precise in Word.
･ There is a limitation in the way Word handles two byte characters that will prevent some characters of Zenkaku-Katakana from printing.
NetScape 2.01l(ja)
･ NetScape Navigator 1.1J sometimes causes a PostScript error (rangecheck), when printing 10 pt Ryumin-Light on A4 paper. Try changing the line breaks by choosing another font or selecting automatic windows size.
･ Printing from the NetScape Navigator with background printing on causes a PostScript error (undefined) when printing a page containing a password font or when printing long documents containing Japanese TrueType fonts such as Osaka.
Persuasion 3.0J
･ When printing to a printer or to a file, print presentations, slides, handouts, notes and outlines are printed as separate jobs.
･ If Clipart is placed outside of the printable area it will be printed that way.
QuarkXPress 3.11J
･ Turn background printing on when printing a document that requires a font to be downloaded to a printer.
･ Setting PostScript Color Matching on in the Print Option dialog will cause a PostScript error unless it is set to Color/Gray Scale. This is fixed in QuarkXpress 3.3J
.
･ EPS file that contain TrueType fonts and are created by the driver through QuarkXpress may cause a printing problem. Create the EPS directly from QuarkXpress instead.
･ To avoid a Typecheck error, it is recommended that you turn ﾒBackground printingﾓ and ﾒUnlimited downloadable fontsﾓ off when printing a document that contains a font that is not in the printer. This problem is fixed in QuarkXpress 3.3J.
･ You can not click a checkbox or radio button for Print/Tiling/Color in the Print dialog. This problem is fixed in QuarkXpress 3.3J.
QuarkXPress 3.3J
･ QuarkXpress 3.3J uses its own implementation of ﾒInput Binﾓ rather than the driver's.
･ Italicized MultipleMaster fonts such as italicized Tekton MM can not be printed from QuarkXpress.
SimpleText
･ A PostScript error may occur when printing a document containing font(s) which are not host resident.
･ Page number may not print correctly when running WorldScript prior to version 7.2.
StateView 4.02J
･ StateView 4.02J will freeze printing a multi-page document containing font(s) which are not printer resident.
SuperPaint 3.0J
･ EPS created by SuperPaint 3.0J cannot be printed correctly. This problem is fixed in SuperPaint to 3.5J.
SuperPaint 3.5J
･ To avoid printing problems, use the Paint Layer rather than the Draw Layer when creating an object which uses texture, gradient fill or transparent mode.
･ SuperPaint 3.5J will freeze, printing Japanese TrueType font, such as Osaka.
WordPerfect-J 2.2, 3.0
･ To avoid printing problems, check ﾒOffﾓ for ﾒUnlimited downloadable fontsﾓ when printing a document from WordPerfect-J v2.2/V3.0 file which contains graphics.
USING THE PSPrinter DRIVER WITH SPOOLERS
･ If a Novell spooler rejects a printing connection due to insufficient user privileges (the queue security option is turned on) or due to an internal error, PSPrinter may hang indefinitely.
･ Netware 3.11 may cause PSPrinter to download fonts more often than necessary resulting in poor printing performance.
･ Versions of Netware prior to 4.0 do not support PSPrinterﾕs ﾒAuto Setupﾓ capability. In these environments, manually select the appropriate PPD for your printer.
･ In general, spoolers that do not comply with version 3.0 of Adobeﾕs
PostScript Language Document Structuring Conventions (DSC) may not take advantage of PSPrinterﾕs advanced features or may exhibit other printing problems.
･ PostScript Level 2 versions prior to v2013 may report a PostScript error if the printer substitutes Courier for a missing font. This occurs if the ﾒPrint Detailed Reportﾓ option is enabled. You can ignore this error message.
